New vertical school to be built in Victoria, Melbourne

You may have noticed some new taller buildings around the North Melbourne area and been wondering what they are. Seven of the new school buildings that have been termed ‘vertical schools’ have been built so far as part of a redevelopment plan for the area. Now, an eighth vertical school is set to be built in the North Melbourne area of Victoria.

Although it is Australia’s second smallest state with a size of 237,659 kilometers squared, Victoria is home to Melbourne which is one of Australia’s most populous cities. Melbourne is home to nearly five million people and the capital of the state Victoria.

Population growth within the inner city of Melbourne has been causing concern in the government in recent years. The inner city population boom is one reason the government is looking to build vertical schools which can help house more students and take up less of the precious urban space.

The Andrews Labor Government has invested more than $36 million Australian Dollars into the state of Victoria for the 2020 – 2021 budget. On top of this fund the Andrews Labor Government has spent the last five years investing more than $9 billion Australian Dollars into schools in the area. The fund has reached over 1,600 schools and created over 10,000 new construction jobs. The investments have been made as part of the government’s target to open 100 new schools in the next five years before 2026.

The new vertical school is currently known as North Melbourne Hill Primary School and is set to open to students by 2023. It will be situated on Molesworth Street and construction will start on the project by mid 2021. The school will include a library, gym, garden and kitchen for students to use as well as a large outdoor space that will also be open to the local community.
